Tesla TPMS Warning Light On But Tire Pressure Is Fine – What to Do?

di Li Lynn SU Sep 19, 2026

Quick Summary

A Tesla TPMS warning light with normal-looking pressure is almost never "nothing." Either one sensor has stopped talking to the car — dead battery, damaged sensor, or a sensor that was never learned — or the light simply hasn't cleared because the car hasn't finished a drive cycle since you corrected the pressure. This guide shows you how to tell the two apart, and the exact order to work through.

Key Takeaway

Look at the TPMS card in your Tesla's display, not the warning light. A blank or "--" reading on one wheel means that sensor has stopped communicating — that's a hardware or relearn problem. All four wheels reading normally with the light still on usually just needs a drive cycle above 15 mph for 15+ minutes to clear. Tesla sensors auto-learn; there is no scan tool or programming step.

01

Why the Warning Light Stays On When Pressure Is Fine

The single most useful thing to understand about Tesla TPMS: the warning light covers two completely different problems — low pressure, and a system fault where the car has lost contact with a sensor. To you it looks like one light, but the car is telling you two different things.

Here's the chain of events behind every reading on your screen:

  1. The sensor inside the wheel measures pressure and broadcasts it wirelessly — either over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on newer Teslas, or RF 433MHz on older ones.
  2. The receiver in the car picks up that signal and matches each sensor ID to a wheel position.
  3. The display and warning light react to whatever the receiver last heard.

That last step is where most confusion comes from. If a sensor stops broadcasting, the receiver remembers nothing new — so the light triggers exactly the same way it would for an underinflated tire. And because Tesla only refreshes TPMS data while the car is rolling, the numbers on your screen are a last-known snapshot, not a live reading. That's why a light can stay on for a while after you've already aired the tire up.

Check the TPMS card, not the light. On your Tesla's display, look at how many wheels show a real number. All four showing pressure with a light on points to a drive-cycle issue. A blank or "--" on one wheel points to that specific sensor.

02

The 7 Most Common Causes

These are the causes we see most often, roughly in order of how frequently they turn out to be the answer.

1. A sensor battery has reached the end of its life

This is the number one cause of a persistent warning on a car whose pressures are genuinely fine. TPMS sensor batteries are sealed and last roughly five to ten years — BLE sensors tend to fall toward the shorter end. The classic early symptom is a warning that appears intermittently, clears on its own for a week, then comes back. Once the battery is fully dead, the sensor is dead too: there's no battery to replace, only the whole unit.

2. The sensor ID was never learned — usually after a rotation or wheel swap

When wheels move to different corners, your Tesla has to re-map each sensor to its new position. It does this automatically, but only once you drive. If you rotated your tires in the driveway and immediately looked at the screen, blanks and a warning are expected. The same thing happens with a second set of wheels — winter or track wheels carry their own sensor IDs, and the car has to learn them before it will show pressures. The old set is simply overwritten.

3. A sensor was damaged during tire service

Mounting and dismounting a tire puts real stress on the valve stem area, and it's easy to crack a sensor body or pinch a stem without noticing. If the warning appeared immediately after new tires or a repair, the sensor itself is a prime suspect — especially if just one wheel is blank.

4. The wrong sensor type was installed

BLE and RF 433MHz sensors are not interchangeable. A BLE sensor will never pair with a car that shipped with RF, and vice versa — the protocols are different and the receiver only listens for one. This is the most common reason a brand-new sensor "doesn't work," and it's entirely avoidable by confirming your build date before ordering.

5. A new sensor is still asleep or hasn't been woken up

Fresh sensors often ship in a low-power sleep state to preserve battery. They wake up on their own once the wheel starts spinning, but it can take longer than people expect — sometimes more than one drive, sometimes a day or two of normal driving. If the sensor type is correct and the car still won't see it, this is usually why.

6. A recent software update or a transient system glitch

Tesla's software updates occasionally reset learned TPMS data, and a car that's mid-update or mid-reboot can hold a stale fault. A touchscreen reboot (hold both scroll wheels until the screen goes black) plus a normal drive cycle clears the vast majority of these. It's worth doing before you spend money on parts.

7. There's an actual slow leak, or the temperature dropped

Two related traps here. First, a pinhole leak, a leaking valve stem, or a bead that isn't seated properly can drop pressure slowly enough that it reads "fine" when you check, then triggers the warning overnight. A soapy-water test on the valve stem and bead finds these. Second, cold weather: pressure falls roughly 1 psi for every 10°F drop, so a tire that was fine in the afternoon can sit below the threshold on a cold morning. The light then stays latched until the car completes a self-check.

03

Match Your Symptom to the Cause

Start here. Find the row that describes what you're actually seeing, and it will point you at the likely culprit.

Symptom Most Likely Cause What to Do
Warning on, but all four pressures show real numbers Light hasn't cleared yet after airing up, or a software glitch Drive 15+ min above 15 mph. Verify with a hand gauge first.
One wheel shows "--" or is blank That sensor isn't communicating — dead battery, damage, or not learned Confirm sensor type matches your build date. Replace if the sensor is 5+ years old.
All four wheels show "--" Sensors not learned, wrong sensor type, or receiver fault Re-apply wheel configuration, drive, then verify sensor protocol. If still blank, it's a service issue.
Warning appeared right after a rotation or wheel swap Sensor IDs not re-mapped yet Drive 10–30 min above 15 mph. Re-apply wheel configuration if it persists.
Warning appeared right after new sensors were installed Sensor still asleep, or wrong sensor type Give it a couple more drive cycles. Check the part number against your build date.
Warning flickers on and off over days or weeks Failing sensor battery, or RF interference on older 433MHz cars Unplug USB chargers and dashcams and retest. If it returns, replace the sensor.
Light goes off, then comes back within a day or two Genuine slow leak, or a sensor at the end of its battery life Soapy-water test the valve stem and bead, then recheck pressure cold.
04

How to Relearn or Reset Tesla TPMS

The good news: Tesla TPMS sensors are auto-learning. There is no manual pairing button, no scan tool, no programming step. This is true for both BLE and the older RF 433MHz systems. You cannot "code" a Tesla sensor in the way you might on other brands.

The standard relearn procedure

  1. Set the correct pressure first using a known-good hand gauge, not the car's reading.
  2. Drive above roughly 15 mph for 15 or more minutes. The car needs rolling time to pick up each sensor and map it to a corner. Some situations need two or three drives — up to half an hour of total driving time.
  3. Watch the TPMS card. Numbers should populate corner by corner. If one wheel stays blank, that sensor isn't broadcasting.

If that doesn't work: force a fresh relearn

On most Teslas you can trigger the car to re-scan by working through the Service menu and re-applying your wheel configuration. Go into the wheel and tire settings, and confirm or re-select your current wheel size. This resets the learned sensor data and starts a fresh relearn on the next drive.

One caution: the wheel configuration setting also tells the car its wheel diameter, which affects range estimates and speed calculations. Make sure you re-select the wheel size that actually matches your car — don't just pick something to clear the light.

Reboot the touchscreen

If the relearn doesn't take, reboot the display by holding both scroll wheels until the screen goes dark and the Tesla logo returns. This clears transient faults and stale sensor data. Do it while parked, then take the car for a normal drive.

05

What to Do, in Order

Work down this list. Most people find their answer in the first three steps, and you won't spend a cent until step seven.

  1. Verify the real pressure with a hand gauge. Don't trust the screen — it may be a stale reading. Set all four to the pressure on your door jamb sticker.
  2. Note exactly which wheels show a reading and which are blank. One blank wheel and four blank wheels point in completely different directions.
  3. Drive 15+ minutes above 15 mph. This clears the majority of false alarms and completes any pending relearn.
  4. Re-apply your wheel configuration in the Service menu to force a fresh relearn, then drive again.
  5. Reboot the touchscreen and repeat the drive cycle.
  6. Rule out interference. On older 433MHz cars, unplug cheap USB chargers, dashcams, and FM transmitters and retest — these are a known cause of intermittent TPMS faults.
  7. Check the age and type of the suspect sensor. If one wheel has been blank through every step, or the car is 5+ years old, that sensor is the answer. Confirm BLE vs RF for your build date before ordering.
  8. If all four stay blank with new, correct sensors, the receiver or module is the remaining suspect — that's a service visit, not a parts order.
06

Is It the Sensor, or Not the Sensor?

Before you buy anything, here's the cleanest way to separate a sensor problem from everything else.

Looks Like This Verdict
One wheel blank, other three reading normally Sensor problem. A single wheel going dark is almost always that sensor — battery, damage, or wrong type.
All four blank, car is new to you or just had wheels swapped Relearn problem. Drive the car; the sensors just haven't been mapped yet.
All four blank after new sensors were installed and driven for days Wrong sensor type, or receiver fault. Verify the protocol first, then suspect the module.
All four read fine, light still on Not a sensor problem. Drive cycle, reboot, or a latching fault.
Warning clears for days, then returns, on a 6-year-old car Failing sensor batteries. Intermittent is the signature of a battery on its way out.
One tire keeps losing a few psi over a week, everything else normal Not TPMS at all. That's a slow leak — valve stem, bead, or a puncture.

If it turns out you do need sensors, the two product cards below cover both protocols. Just confirm your build date and sensor type first — that single step prevents the most common ordering mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Tesla TPMS light on when the tire pressure is fine?

The warning light covers two different problems: low pressure and a system fault. If your pressures read normally but the light is still on, either the car has not completed a drive cycle since you corrected the pressure, or one sensor has stopped communicating with the vehicle. Check the TPMS card in your display — a blank or "--" reading on one wheel points to a sensor issue rather than an actual pressure problem.

One wheel shows "--" on my Tesla TPMS display. What does that mean?

A blank or "--" reading means your Tesla is not receiving a signal from that specific sensor. The most common causes are a dead sensor battery, a sensor that was damaged during tire service, or a sensor that has not been learned yet after a rotation or wheel swap. Confirm the sensor type matches your build date before ordering a replacement.

Do I need a scan tool or programming tool to reset Tesla TPMS sensors?

No. Tesla TPMS sensors are auto-learning — there is no manual programming, pairing button, or scan tool required. Drive above roughly 15 mph for 15 or more minutes and the car registers the sensors on its own. If a sensor still isn't picked up, re-apply your wheel configuration in the Service menu to force a fresh relearn.

How long do Tesla TPMS sensors last?

Most Tesla TPMS sensors last between five and ten years. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sensors typically fall toward the shorter end of that range, while the older RF 433MHz sensors often last longer. Intermittent warnings that come and go are the classic first sign of a battery nearing the end of its life — once it dies completely, the whole sensor needs replacing.

The TPMS light came on right after a tire rotation. Why?

This is usually a relearn issue rather than a fault. When wheels move to different corners, your Tesla has to re-map each sensor ID to its new position. If the car hasn't completed a relearn drive yet, the display can show blanks or a warning. Drive above 15 mph for 15 or more minutes — if it persists, re-apply your wheel configuration in the Service menu.

Can I keep driving with the TPMS warning light on?

Yes, it's safe to drive — a TPMS warning is informational, not a breakdown. However, if the underlying cause is an actual slow leak, driving indefinitely on an underinflated tire causes uneven wear and heat buildup. Verify the real pressure with a hand gauge first, then work through the causes in order.

What you've learned in this guide

A quick recap before you take the next step.

The light means two things

Low pressure, or a lost signal. The TPMS card on your display tells you which — a blank wheel is a sensor, numbers all around means a drive cycle.

Rotation and wheel swaps need a drive

Sensor IDs must be re-mapped to their new corners. Drive 15+ min above 15 mph before assuming anything is broken.

No scan tool, ever

Tesla sensors auto-learn. Re-applying your wheel configuration forces a fresh relearn — that's as close to a "reset button" as it gets.

One blank wheel = replace the sensor

A single wheel that stays dark after a drive and a reboot is almost always the sensor itself — especially on a car 5+ years old.
