Update, August 19, 2026: This is Tesla’s ninth millionth car worldwide, built at Giga Shanghai — not Shanghai’s ninth millionth local car. Three weeks earlier the same plant hit 4 million Shanghai-built units (Tesery: Dec. 8 Model Y L). The 8 millionth global car had been a Model Y at Giga Berlin in June 2025.
On December 30, 2025 Tesla Asia posted that the company’s 9 millionth vehicle globally had just rolled off the line at Giga Shanghai, a white Model Y. Open the original X post. Global Times and Xinhua carried Tesla’s release the same week. A lifetime global odometer ticking 9 million at Lingang is not 9 million cars sold in 2025, and not 9 million cars built only in China.

Global 9 million vs plant 4 million
Fremont, Berlin, Texas, Shanghai, and older lines all feed the global count. Shanghai hosted this particular unit. Tesla later also talked up a 5 millionth local drive unit in January 2026 — a motor/inverter counter, not another 9 million cars.
