How to Clean Tesla Windshield Camera: Fix Hazy Video

Have you noticed that your Tesla Dashcam or Sentry Mode footage looks foggy, hazy, or washed out? You are not alone. Many Model 3 and Model Y owners experience this issue, which often stems from a thin film of residue building up on the inside of the windshield, right in front of the camera housing. This can not only ruin your road trip recordings but potentially interfere with Autopilot performance. In this edition of Tesery Tesla TIPS, we will guide you through the simple DIY process to fix this.

Why Does the Tesla Front Camera Get Hazy?

Before we jump into the cleaning process, it is helpful to understand why this happens. The haze is typically caused by "off-gassing" from the plastic materials used in the dashboard and the camera housing itself. Over time, especially when the car is parked in the sun, these plastics release vapors that condense on the glass. Since the camera housing is somewhat sealed against the windshield, this residue gets trapped, creating a foggy layer that the wipers cannot reach. Step-by-Step: How to Clean Tesla Windshield Camera

Cleaning the inside of the camera housing is easier than it looks. You do not need any heavy tools—just a pry tool (or strong fingers) and a quality glass cleaner.

1. Remove the Housing Cover: Locate the plastic cover behind the rearview mirror. Gently pull down on the edges to release the clips. It requires a bit of force, but be careful not to break the tabs.
2. Access the Camera Module: Once the outer cover is off, you might see the camera module exposed. In some models, there is a secondary shroud that needs to be unclipped.
3. Clean the Glass: Apply a small amount of non-ammonia glass cleaner to a microfiber cloth. Do not spray directly on the camera or electronics. Wipe the inside of the windshield where the camera looks through. You will likely see a significant amount of dirt coming off.

Tools Needed and Reassembly

To perform this job effectively, ensure you have a lint-free microfiber towel to avoid leaving dust specs in front of the lens. After cleaning the glass, it is also a good idea to gently wipe the camera lens itself with a lens cleaning cloth. Once everything is crystal clear, snap the plastic covers back into place. You should hear a distinct click when they are seated correctly. This simple maintenance task is one of our top recommendations in our Tesery Tesla TIPS collection.

Conclusion

Clear video footage is essential for both your safety features and capturing memories on the road. By taking ten minutes to clean inside the camera housing, you can restore your Tesla's vision to high definition.
