Update, August 19, 2026: The December 22 notice is an agreement to put xAI / Grok on GenAI.mil at Impact Level 5 for Department of War personnel, aimed at early 2026. It is not a statement that Grok flies weapons. An earlier 2025 xAI defense contract (the one Sen. Warren asked about in September) is a different award.
On December 22, 2025 the U.S. Department of War said it had entered an agreement with xAI so Grok-family models can run on GenAI.mil, the department’s generative-AI platform for about 3 million military and civilian personnel. Initial deployment was targeted for early 2026 at Impact Level 5 (controlled unclassified information). Primary sources: the War Department release and xAI’s own Dec. 22 note. Fox News and Executive Gov repeated the same scope: enterprise workflows and CUI, plus X-derived open-source context — not a classified weapons-control system in that release.

GenAI.mil is an office tool: drafting, search, summarization for people who already have a DoW account. Putting Grok next to other frontier models is a vendor add. xAI’s post says enterprise AI and mission use cases; the War Department post says daily workflows and CUI. Keep the claim inside those sentences.

The release says xAI is being added to GenAI.mil, not that every other model was removed.
Is this the $200 million contract Sen. Warren criticized?
Warren’s September 2025 letter is about an earlier xAI award. Treat Dec. 22 as the GenAI.mil expansion unless a later filing merges the two.
Does this change Tesla FSD?
No. xAI and Tesla are separate companies. This is a government software seat.
