Update, August 19, 2026: A mayor in the passenger seat is still a demo. Italy did not turn that ride into nationwide owner FSD. Tesla’s later EU owner-software path started with the Dutch RDW decision. The same week’s ride-along extension is the public booking version of this official visit.
On December 3, 2025 Tesla hosted Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Mobility Assessor Eugenio Patanè for an on-street FSD (Supervised) demonstration — described as the first time an Italian mayor had tried the system in person on Rome streets. Andrea Stroppa posted the Italian readout: Tesla hosted the two officials for a road demo of Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Open the original X post. Vaielettrico and English recaps said the car was a Model 3 in city traffic (intersections, roundabouts, mixed bikes/scooters). That is a political test ride. It is not Italy type-approving owner FSD, and it is not unsupervised Robotaxi in the centro storico.

Key facts
- Who: Mayor Gualtieri and assessor Patanè, Tesla-hosted, Dec. 3, 2025.
- What they rode: FSD (Supervised) on public Rome streets, reported as a Model 3, passenger-demo format.
- What Tesla was doing that week: European ride-alongs in Italy/France/Germany, then an extension through March 2026.
- What this is not: A Consiglio Comunale vote, or FSD sold to every Italian Tesla.
A mayor is not a regulator
City hall can like a ride. Homologation sits with national/EU authorities (RDW was Tesla’s file). Do not collapse a Campidoglio photo-op into “Italy approved FSD.” The public can book the same Supervised passenger format Tesery covered for Denmark and Switzerland.
FAQ
Did the mayor drive?
Coverage describes a Tesla-hosted on-road Supervised demo. Treat him as the official guest, not the safety driver of record, unless Tesla posted otherwise.
Can Romans turn on FSD in their own cars now?
Not from this visit. Wait for the country software approval.
Was this unsupervised?
No. The label Tesla used is Supervised.
For Italian owners: a sindaco in a Model 3 does not flip FSD on your VIN. Watch Tesla’s software notes and the ministry/RDW paper trail.
