Tesla's Magic Dock Expands to Canada, Opening Superchargers to All EVs with CCS

by Lucky LI on Aug 25, 2023

Tesla has introduced its innovative Magic Dock technology to Superchargers in Canada, making it possible for electric vehicles equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) to access the world's most extensive and reliable EV charging network.

The rollout of the Magic Dock commenced earlier this year, with initial installations taking place in California and New York. This groundbreaking technology allows non-Tesla EV owners to utilize Tesla's Supercharger Network for charging. At most Magic Dock locations, non-Tesla drivers can initiate charging by scanning a QR code displayed on a sign adjacent to the Supercharger station, providing clear instructions on how to charge their vehicle.

Installation efforts have been ongoing throughout the year, primarily in select areas. Our research has revealed that the initial deployment occurred in New York, starting with the first location in Verona, and extended to California, with Magic Docks situated in both Northern and Southern regions.

Recently, the Magic Dock technology has made its official debut in Texas, near Fort Worth, expanding its reach across the United States.

Excitingly, the Magic Dock has now reached Supercharger stations in Canada, marking a significant milestone. This represents the introduction of Tesla's open Supercharger plan in a new country. This development follows an announcement in May, in which Tesla collaborated with the Government of Canada to open a portion of its Supercharger Network to non-Tesla EV drivers. The collaboration aims to make approximately 750 individual charging stalls available to non-Tesla drivers by the end of 2025.

Notably, this announcement coincided with Tesla and Ford's revelation that the Detroit-based automaker would gain access to 12,000 Superchargers across North America. This move is part of an effort to enhance charging accessibility for all electric vehicle drivers, regardless of the brand they drive.

This year, Tesla has strategically expanded its influence, with other automakers such as GM, Rivian, Volvo, Honda, Acura, and several others also committing to adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). Ultimately, this means that all of these automakers' vehicles will feature the NACS inlet, eliminating the need for initial adapters to charge at Supercharger locations. Tesla's commitment to expanding access to its Supercharger Network is a significant step towards a more convenient and accessible electric vehicle charging ecosystem for all.
