Tesla Front Lights Explained: Headlights, DRL & Fog Lights

by Tesery Tesla on Sep 03, 2026

Tesla Lighting 101

Everything on the Front of Your Tesla That Lights Up

Headlights, daytime running lights, and fog lights all live on the front of your Tesla — but they're three different systems with three different fixes. Here's how to tell them apart and where to go for the deep dive on each.

Quick Summary

Your Tesla's front lighting is made up of three parts: the headlights, the DRL signature strip, and the bumper-mounted turn signal/fog light. This guide breaks down what each one does, how they differ by model and year, and links out to a full walkthrough for whichever one you're actually dealing with.

Key Takeaway

Most searches for "Tesla front lights" are really about one of three things: a headlight problem, a DRL that's acting up, or a bumper light/turn signal issue. Figure out which one you have first — the fix, part, and even the cost are completely different for each.

What's in this guide

  • 01What counts as your "front lights"?The 3 systems, explained

01

What Counts as Your Tesla's "Front Lights"?

"Front lights" isn't an official Tesla term — it's what most owners say when they're not sure which specific part is acting up. In practice, it covers three independent systems.

1. Headlights

The main low-beam/high-beam unit built into the corner of the front fascia. Depending on your model and year, this is a halogen, sealed LED, or Matrix adaptive assembly — and it's the only one of the three that's expensive to replace.

2. Daytime running lights (DRL)

The thin LED strip that traces the top or outer edge of the headlight housing — Tesla calls this the "signature" light. It's on by default any time the car is powered and in Drive, independent of your headlight setting.

3. Bumper-mounted turn signal / fog light

The smaller light at each front corner of the bumper. On some models and trims this houses a genuine fog lamp; on others it's purely a turn signal (sometimes combined with a secondary DRL element). We cover this split in detail in section 4.

Not sure which one you're dealing with? If the whole housing is dark, it's the headlight. If a thin strip along the edge is out but the beam still works, it's the DRL. If it's the small light down in the bumper corner, it's the third system.

02

Headlights: Which Type Does Your Tesla Have?

Headlight hardware has changed several times across Tesla's lineup, and the right fix depends entirely on which generation you have.

  • Model S / Model X: early cars used halogen projectors with replaceable bulbs, mid-generation cars moved to sealed LED units, and current cars use Matrix adaptive LED headlights.
  • Model 3 / Model Y: launched with sealed LED headlights; the Highland (Model 3) and Juniper (Model Y) refreshes introduced Matrix adaptive headlights in supported markets.

For a full breakdown by model and year — plus replacement steps — see our Tesla Headlights FAQ for Every Model and, if you drive a Model S, the Model S–specific headlight guide. If your car has Matrix headlights, our Matrix vs. Adaptive Headlights comparison explains what the tech actually does and how to confirm you have it.

Ready to replace a unit yourself? Start with our step-by-step How to Replace Tesla Headlight guide.

03

Daytime Running Lights (DRL): How They Work

The DRL is the design signature most people picture when they think of a Tesla's front end — but it's a separate electrical circuit from the headlight, with its own failure points.

When does it turn on?

With the Lights setting on Auto (the default), the DRL activates automatically whenever the car is powered and shifted into Drive, regardless of the time of day. On some older Model S and Model X, enabling Range Mode suppresses the DRL to save a small amount of energy — if yours seems to have "disappeared," that's the first thing to check under Controls.

Can you turn it off?

In most regions, no — DRLs are a mandated safety feature and Tesla enforces that at the software level. Where local regulations do allow it, the toggle lives under Controls > Lights.

Why is my DRL not lighting up?

  • Settings, not hardware: confirm Lights is set to Auto and Range Mode is off.
  • Partial segment failure: LED strips fail in sections — if only part of the strip is dark, that's a sign of a failing LED board rather than a blown fuse.
  • Connector or moisture issue: a loose harness plug or water intrusion into the housing can take out the DRL circuit while the main beam keeps working fine.
  • One side only: if it's isolated to a single headlight, it's almost always the unit itself, not a shared fuse or module.

DRL out on one side but the headlight still works? That's usually a healthy headlight with a failing internal LED board — not a reason to replace the whole assembly. Confirm with a service center or a trusted installer before ordering parts.

Fog Lights & the Bumper Turn Signal

This is the part of the front-lighting system that causes the most confusion, because it's not consistent across every car. Depending on your model, year, and market, the small light at each front bumper corner is either:

  • A genuine fog lamp with its own beam pattern, or
  • A combined turn-signal/DRL unit with no separate fog function at all.

The quickest way to check: open Controls > Lights on your touchscreen. If there's a dedicated fog light icon, you have a real fog lamp. If there isn't, your car uses the combo unit, and what looks like a "fog light" is actually just your turn signal housing.

We're publishing a full Tesla Fog Lights Guide covering fitment by model, what to do if yours isn't working, and upgrade options — check back soon or explore our current Fog Lights & DRL collection in the meantime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the "front lights" on a Tesla?

Tesla's front lighting is made up of three separate systems: the headlights (low beam, high beam, or Matrix adaptive units), the daytime running lights (DRL) — the LED signature strip along the headlight housing — and the front bumper lights, which handle the front turn signal and, on some models and years, a fog lamp.

Can I turn off my Tesla's daytime running lights?

In regions where DRLs are legally mandated, they cannot be fully disabled and will activate automatically whenever the car is in Drive. Where local law allows it, the toggle is under Controls > Lights. Enabling Range Mode on some older Model S/X also suppressed the DRL to save power.

Does my Tesla have a real fog light?

It depends on the model, year, and market. Some Model 3/Y configurations use a genuine fog lamp in the front bumper corner, while others use a combined DRL/turn-signal unit in that position without a true fog beam. Check your Controls > Lights menu — if there's no fog light icon, your car likely uses the combo unit.

Why is my Tesla's DRL not turning on?

The most common causes are the Lights setting not being on Auto, Range Mode being enabled on older Model S/X, a blown LED segment inside the housing, or a loose harness connector. If only one side is out, it's almost always a hardware fault rather than a settings issue.

What you've learned in this guide

A quick recap before you head to the specific guide you need.

Three systems, three fixes

Headlights, DRL, and bumper lights are electrically independent. Diagnose which one is actually failing before you shop for parts.

DRL issues are often settings, not hardware

Check Auto lighting mode and Range Mode first — a surprising number of "broken DRL" reports are just a setting.

Not every Tesla has real fog lights

Confirm via Controls > Lights before ordering fog light parts — you may actually have a turn-signal-only unit.
