Tesla's Hidden Improvements: Enhanced Rear Camera and Clarity Upgrades

Reverse Camera Adjustments

In the latest update, version 2023.32, Tesla has made notable improvements to the rear camera view. They've achieved this by cropping the video feed, completely eliminating the trunk from the top portion of the reverse camera and removing most of the bumper from the lower portion as well.

At first glance, it might appear as though this adjustment reduces the visual range. However, it's actually a step forward. By narrowing the focus to the essential elements of the rear view, distractions are minimized, offering drivers a clearer, more centralized perspective of what's behind the vehicle. This refined vision empowers drivers to make more precise judgments when reversing, ultimately enhancing safety and precision.

Improved Camera Clarity

In addition to these adjustments, Tesla has enhanced the video post-processing, resulting in improved white and color balance for the vehicle's camera feeds. These refinements translate into a more natural-looking video display when using live view features like Sentry Mode or the Dashcam.

Interestingly, Tesla's feature that allows users to preview each camera feed under "Controls > Service" still displays the unaltered camera feeds, including the repeater cameras, which were also recently cropped to remove the vehicle's side-mirrors when using the blind spot camera feature.

Update: Currently, the reverse camera cropping appears to be applied exclusively to hardware 4 vehicles, which come equipped with cameras featuring higher resolution. It remains unclear whether Tesla intends to implement this video cropping on HW3 vehicles as well.
