Indonesia's Attractive Incentives Aim to Woo Tesla and Other Automakers

by LILucky on Jul 26, 2023

Tesla, a prominent player in the electric vehicle market, is among several automakers being courted with enticing incentives by Indonesia as the country strives to attract the attention of the world's leading automotive companies.

Just like India's efforts to secure a commitment from Tesla to establish a production facility within its borders, Indonesia has been actively pursuing the electric car manufacturer for several years.

Over the past year, significant progress has been made in the relationship between Tesla and the Indonesian government. High-ranking officials, including President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, Senior Cabinet Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, and Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, have engaged in discussions with Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk.

These ongoing discussions, which started in 2020, have intensified, especially since Indonesia offered its vast nickel reserves to support battery production, a crucial component for electric vehicles.

Back in January, Bloomberg reported that Tesla was on the verge of finalizing an agreement with Indonesia to construct a one-million-unit annual vehicle production plant. Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia expressed optimism, stating that the country was actively in touch with Tesla, and a potential deal was on the horizon.

Now, according to Reuters, Indonesia is gearing up to offer substantial incentives not only to Tesla but also to other companies like BYD. The country is determined to benchmark its offers against those from rival nations such as Vietnam and Thailand, which are also vying for the investment of major automakers.

While BYD has already committed to establishing a production facility in Thailand, Indonesia is ready to put forth attractive packages to gain a competitive edge in attracting global automakers, including Tesla.

Luhut emphasized that the incentive packages are in their final stages of preparation, asserting, "Tomorrow, we are going to finalize incentives that we are going to give to any EV investment in Indonesia."

As Tesla explores opportunities in various countries worldwide, Indonesia is keen to showcase its potential as a favorable investment destination, along with India, Canada, France, and reportedly Spain. However, the automaker is said to have withdrawn from the Spanish option after details of the potential deal were leaked.

With both Indonesia and other nations vying for Tesla's attention, the competition for hosting Tesla's production facilities remains fierce. As Indonesia fine-tunes its incentives to appeal to the electric vehicle giant, the automotive world eagerly awaits the outcome of these high-stakes negotiations.
