Huawei and Chery Unveil Luxeed S7: A Tesla Model S Competitor

by Lucky LI on Sep 26, 2023

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has recently joined forces with Chery Automobile, a China-owned company, to introduce their electric vehicle (EV) brand called Luxeed. The highly-anticipated Luxeed S7, set to be launched in the Chinese market later this November, is poised to take on Tesla's Model S and other contenders in the electric vehicle market

Richard Yu Chengdong, the head of Huawei's car department, made the exciting announcement during a recent launch event. He revealed that the Luxeed S7 will make its grand entrance at the end of November and is expected to outshine Tesla's Model S in various aspects. While specific details regarding the pricing, range, and intelligent features of the S7 were not disclosed during the event, a peek into China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website suggests that this EV will be built on the Chery Auto E0X platform, designed for all-wheel-drive, dual-motor vehicles.

Typically, EVs come equipped with features like semi-autonomous driving, self-parking capabilities, voice controls, and more, catering to the demands of tech-savvy Chinese consumers in the middle class. Industry analysts are optimistic about the Luxeed project, citing the formidable partnership between Chery, a prominent player in the automotive industry, and Huawei, renowned for its technological prowess and innovation.

Chery, headquartered in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui, has been making substantial strides in the EV market. Their commitment to electric vehicles was further exemplified when they established the subsidiary Jetour in 2018, which achieved remarkable success last year, selling over 180,000 EVs, marking a 17 percent year-over-year increase.

It's worth noting that Huawei faced expanded sanctions from the U.S. government earlier this month, following initial sanctions imposed on the company in 2019. The company also faced controversy in 2021 when one of its executives referred to Tesla's vehicles as "killing machines," leading to complaints from Tesla's legal team.

As the Luxeed S7 prepares to enter the EV arena, all eyes are on this intriguing collaboration between tech giant Huawei and automotive stalwart Chery, promising an exciting competition in the world of electric vehicles.
