What Does “TPMS Sensor Compatibility” Actually Mean?
A TPMS sensor has to match your Tesla in four ways. If any one of these is wrong, the sensor won't work — even if it physically screws in.
Two sensor types to know: Tesla moves from RF to BLE Bluetooth on newer models. BLE is used on Model Y, 2021+ Model S/X, newer Model 3 and Cybertruck. RF is used on older Model S/X and early Model 3.
- Physical fit — The sensor and valve stem must fit your wheel's valve hole. Most Tesla wheels use a standard TPMS sensor mounting, but the housing still has to be physically compatible.
- Wireless protocol — The sensor must use the same protocol (RF or BLE) as your Tesla's TPMS receiver. A BLE sensor won't work with an RF receiver, and vice versa.
- Tesla-specific data format — Tesla sensors use Tesla-specific data frames. A sensor built for another car brand might physically fit, but it still won't communicate with your Tesla.
- Sensor ID / pairing — The car needs to recognize the sensor ID. Some aftermarket sensors are sold pre-programmed; others need to be programmed or cloned from your old sensor.
Compatibility is more than “the valve stem fits.” The sensor has to be recognized by your Tesla — otherwise you'll still see the tire pressure warning.

How to Tell Which TPMS Sensor Your Tesla Needs
Follow these steps to avoid buying the wrong sensor:
- Read the part number on the old sensor. This is the most reliable way. You may need to remove the wheel and read the number printed on the sensor body or valve stem.
- Use a TPMS scan tool. A scan tool can read the sensor ID and sometimes the part number without dismounting the tire.
- Check the product listing for exact model years. “BLE for Model Y” or “RF for 2012-2020 Model S” tells you exactly what will fit.
- Give the seller your VIN. For Tesla-compatible TPMS sensors, the VIN is often the fastest way to confirm fitment.
- Drive the car after installation. In many Tesla models, new sensors need to be “woken up” by driving above about 15 mph for a few minutes.
