Elon Musk Meets with Turkish President: Talks of a Potential Tesla Gigafactory in Turkey

by Lucky LI on Sep 18, 2023

In an unexpected rendezvous, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk sat down with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in New York City on a recent Sunday. The meeting, filled with intrigue and potential, covered a diverse range of topics, but one standout conversation revolved around the enticing prospect of Tesla establishing its next Gigafactory in Turkey.

The exclusive gathering unfolded at the Turkey House in the heart of New York City, a setting that added a touch of diplomacy to the occasion. The Directorate of Communications in Turkey confirmed the event and revealed that President Erdoğan extended a compelling invitation to Musk, urging Tesla to consider Turkey as the location for its seventh Gigafactory. This ambitious proposal, however, was just one facet of their discussions.

Accompanying Musk to the meeting was his youngest addition to the family, X Æ A-12, as evidenced by the candid photos and videos shared on social media. Despite the wealth of topics covered, the meeting, according to @Dima Zeniuk, lasted a succinct 45 minutes.

As a gesture of goodwill, President Erdoğan presented Musk with two noteworthy books: "UN Reform: A New Approach to International Cooperation," authored by the Turkish Directorate of Communications, and "A Fairer World is Possible," a book penned by Erdoğan himself. The Turkish President's visit to New York was primarily to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, scheduled to commence shortly.

Intriguingly, Tesla initiated deliveries of its Model Y vehicles in Turkey back in May, despite initially planning to introduce all four of its models in the country last year. The U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer also unveiled its inaugural design studio and Supercharger stations in Turkey just this April. These developments seemed to hint at the imminent arrival of a wider range of Tesla vehicles in the country.

Presently, Tesla's Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles are not readily available in Turkey. The country's configurator for these models displays a "Get Updates" button, unlike the "Order Now" and "Test Drive" options found on the Model Y order configurator.

Additionally, it's worth noting that earlier this year, Elon Musk offered assistance to Turkey by providing access to SpaceX's Starlink internet service following a devastating earthquake that resulted in numerous casualties. Although Starlink has yet to receive official approval in Turkey, a Turkish official politely declined the offer while expressing gratitude to Musk for the gesture.
