Update, August 19, 2026: Lemonade’s real product launch was January 21, 2026: Autonomous Car insurance, about 50% off FSD-engaged miles via Tesla Fleet API, not “almost free.” See also lemonade.com/fsd. The December 2025 Tesery headline overstated a Lemonade co-founder’s earlier “explore… (almost) free” line as a Tesla-run insurance program.
In December 2025 Tesla owners in some U.S. states could already buy Lemonade car insurance, and Lemonade president/co-founder Shai Wininger had publicly said the company would be “happy to explore insuring Tesla FSD miles for (almost) free.” That is a Lemonade quote about a future FSD-mile price. It is not Tesla Insurance rebranded, not a Tesla press release, and not a nationwide $0 FSD policy. Tesla’s own insurance product (where it exists) stayed a separate company program.
Key facts
- Who spoke: Lemonade’s Shai Wininger, offering to explore nearly free FSD-mile cover — widely circulated in October–December 2025 Tesla coverage.
- What existed in December: Ordinary Lemonade auto policies that can include Teslas in the states Lemonade writes (Tesery’s original note named California, Oregon, Arizona). That is admitted-company auto insurance, not a Tesla OEM plan.
- What launched later: Jan. 21, 2026 Lemonade Autonomous Car: ~50% off per-mile rates when FSD is engaged, using Tesla data with permission. Hardware 4 / recent firmware, select states.
- What this is not: Tesla “introducing” Lemonade as official Tesla Insurance, or free FSD miles for every owner on Dec. 11.
Quote vs product vs Tesla Insurance
Wininger’s “almost free” line was a teaser about using FSD safety data to price miles. Lemonade’s 2026 product is a 50% FSD-mile discount, which is cheaper, not free. Tesla Insurance (Tesla’s own program in some states) is a different underwriter. Owners should compare declarations pages, not headlines.
FAQ
Did Tesla sign Lemonade as its exclusive insurer in December 2025?
No public Tesla 8-K or insurance filing said that. Lemonade sells its own policy and later used Tesla’s Fleet API.
Are FSD miles actually free?
No. The 2026 product is about half-price FSD miles, plus a base rate.
Does this change FSD liability?
No. FSD (Supervised) still needs a paying, attentive driver. Insurance price is not a regulator’s blessing.
For owners: if you want the FSD-mile discount, read Lemonade’s current states and HW4 rules. A December 2025 blog post is not your binder.
