Got your new ring? Stop. Before you rush out to tap it on your B-Pillar, take a moment to read this.
Your Tesery Smart Ring isn't just a piece of jewelry; it's a precision hardware instrument containing an encrypted NFC transponder. It doesn't "clone" your existing cardāit acts as a completely new, authorized key. This guide is your encyclopedia for getting it right the first time.
Rest assured, the Tesery Ring uses the same high-level encryption protocols as Tesla's official key cards. The pairing process happens entirely locally within your vehicle's OS. We do not have access to your car, and the ring simply acts as a secure "token" that you authorize.
1. Anatomy 101: The "Sweet Spot"
The most common reason for "failed reads" isn't softwareāit's physics. Unlike the credit card key, which has a large antenna loop, the Smart Ring packs its technology into a compact circle. You need to know where the chip lives.
The "Knocking" Gesture
When unlocking your car from the outside, do not flatten your hand against the pillar. This creates a gap between the ring and the sensor.
Instead, use the "Knocking Gesture." Make a loose fist as if you are knocking on a door. This brings the outer surface of the ring (where the chip is) in direct contact with the B-Pillar glass.
2. Preparation
Before we begin, ensure the following:
- Park Safely: Ensure the car is in Park (P).
- The Master Key: You must have an already paired Tesla Key Card (the original plastic one) handy. Tesla requires this for 2-Factor Authentication.
3. The Setup Process

Navigate to the Menu
On your touchscreen, tap the Car Icon (bottom left) -> Locks -> Keys -> Tap Add Key (+). -
Position the Ring (The Tricky Part)
The screen will ask you to tap the new key. Locations vary by model year.Pre-Flight Check Remove any aftermarket center console organizers, silicone mats, or metal objects. These block the NFC signal.Model 3 & Model Y (Pre-2024) Place the ring behind the cup holders on the center console.Model 3 "Highland" (2024+ Refresh) Place ring on the card icon on the wireless charging divider. Ensure it is centered.Model S & Model X (Plaid/Long Range) Place the ring on the Left Wireless Phone Charger. (Not the cup holders). -
Authorize with Master Card
The screen will change to: "Tap existing key card to approve." Remove your ring and place your original Tesla Key Card on the same spot. -
Success
The key list will refresh, and you will see "Unknown Key."
4. The "Magic Moment": Linking Driver Profiles
Most people stop at step 3. To get the true luxury experience, you need to tell the car that this ring = YOU.
How to do it:
- Tap the Pencil Icon next to "Unknown Key" and rename it "Tesery Ring."
- Tap the Profile (Head) Icon next to the name.
- Select your specific Driver Profile.
5. Troubleshooting Scenarios
If it's not scanning, it's usually one of these three culprits.
Scenario A: "Nothing happens."
The Fix: The Coin Roll. If you have a larger ring size, laying it flat might create a "blind spot." Try standing the ring up vertically and rolling it slowly across the sensor area like a coin.
Scenario B: "It's glitchy."
The Fix: Metal Interference. Do you have a vape pen, metal wallet, or another phone nearby? Even a laptop can throw off the NFC frequency. Clear the area.
Scenario C: "Cannot find the B-Pillar spot."
The Fix: Go Lower. Many users tap the camera glass. The actual RFID reader is located below the camera, in the black pillar space.
Target the area below the camera, not the camera itself.
