Tesla China Slashes Price for Model 3 Powered Trunk Upgrade

Tesla China has recently introduced a significant price reduction for the Model 3 powered trunk upgrade. Formerly priced at RMB 3,980 ($546), the cost of this upgrade has now been trimmed down by RMB 1,000 ($137), bringing it down to just RMB 2,980 ($408).

The latest Tesla Model 3 units rolling off the production line come equipped with a powered trunk as a standard feature. However, this wasn't always the case. Model 3 vehicles produced at Giga Shanghai before January 2021 were equipped with a manual trunk that could be opened but not closed through the vehicle's infotainment display.

In late 2020, Tesla introduced a refresh for the Model 3, ushering in a range of improvements, including enhanced range, new wheel options, and the coveted powered trunk feature. With this refresh, Tesla owners gained the ability to effortlessly open and close their Model 3's trunk using the infotainment display or mobile app.

In a pleasant turn of events, Tesla China made an exciting announcement in February 2022 by revealing plans to launch a dedicated powered trunk retrofit specifically designed for pre-refresh Model 3 owners. Priced at RMB 3,980, this upgrade package includes a generous three-year warranty for the powered trunk, along with additional UI display features.

Given the reduced cost of this upgrade, owners of older Model 3 units may now find it more economically viable to enhance their vehicle's trunk capabilities. A powered trunk offers undeniable convenience, especially when loading and unloading cargo. Moreover, it brings older Model 3 units closer to their more recently updated counterparts, which is especially appealing as Tesla's Project Highland launch approaches.
