CATL Unveils Breakthrough Battery: A Game-Changer for Electric Vehicles

Chinese battery powerhouse, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), has revealed a groundbreaking battery innovation poised to address a significant drawback in electric vehicles (EVs).
Known as "Shenxing," or "god-like movement," this battery is projected to provide a remarkable 400 kilometers (250 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. Gao Han, CATL's Chief Technology Officer for their electric vehicle division, shared this impressive detail.
Imagine the potential: with CATL's Shenxing battery, vehicles could travel from New York to Boston—a distance of around 215 miles—following a brief 10-minute charge, akin to a typical gas station pit stop.
The Shenxing battery is anticipated to be the world's first "4C superfast charging LFP battery." LFP batteries are renowned for their affordability and chemical stability. However, their energy density falls behind other battery types, potentially limiting the range of EVs.
Nevertheless, LFP batteries have gained widespread use, notably through companies like Tesla. Tesla has employed LFP batteries in its budget-friendly vehicles like the China Model 3 RWD, as well as in energy storage solutions like the Megapack.
Mass production of this next-generation LFP battery is slated for late 2023, with deliveries commencing in 2024. The intriguing question remains whether prominent clients like Tesla will embrace this new CATL battery. Given its qualities, it wouldn't be surprising if this battery finds its way into future vehicles. Notably, such a battery could align perfectly with Tesla's upcoming cost-effective vehicle, intended for production at Gigafactory Mexico.
CATL's introduction of the Shenxing battery coincides with challenges faced by the EV industry in China. Government EV subsidies are shrinking, while post-COVID economic challenges have led to decreased consumption.
